Raikkonen leads way on day two in Barcelona

20th February 2020, 19:47 by Aidan Perkins

Alfa Romeo driver Kimi Raikkonen recorded the quickest time on the second day of the first pre-season Formula 1 test in Barcelona.

Finnish star Raikkonen recorded the quickest time of the day, ahead of Racing Point's Sergio Perez, Renault's Daniel Ricciardo and Red Bull's Alexander Albon.

Reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton was ninth on the day but his fastest time from Wednesday is still the quickest of the winter so far, just over 0.1secs faster than Raikkonen managed on Thursday.

Lap times in testing are often unreliable as teams test out new cars, fuel levels, tyres and other different specifications as they continue to plan for the new campaign.

There was some drama on the second day when Haas driver Romain Grosjean crashed at Turn Four at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya late on but he was still able to return to the pits without much of a problem.

The new F1 season gets underway next month with the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne on March 15.
