Vettel upbeat despite rivals' pace

13th March 2018, 18:03 by Neil Foster

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel feels testing times set by Mercedes and Red Bull may not be an accurate guide of pace due to the tyres used.

It seemed as though Mercedes held the edge on pace during the two testing periods in Barcelona, with Red Bull between the reigning champions and Ferrari.

Testing times are usually taken with a pinch of salt as teams are trying out different things ahead of the new season, and Vettel believes the fact that his team’s main rivals did their race simulations entirely on the medium tyre means that not too much should be read into their performances.

"Our competitors - Mercedes and Red Bull - used one type of tyre for their race distance simulations, which is something you can't do in a Grand Prix," said Vettel. "This has an impact on the strategies and ultimately on the result.

"We're starting from a good base with our SF71H car. Now we'll have to work on development to further explore and improve its potential."
