Fleetwood feels Ryder Cup this year would 'feel weird'

25th March 2020, 15:49 by Simon Barlow

Tommy Fleetwood has added to calls for the 2020 Ryder Cup to be postponed to give all golfers a fair chance of qualifying for it.

The biennial contest between Europe and the United States is scheduled to be played at Whistling Straits, Wisconsin from September 25-27 later this year.

But the coronavirus pandemic sweeping the globe has meant a number of European Tour and US PGA Tour events have been suspended - leaving a shortened qualification process for the team event.

With majors like the Masters and PGA Championship looking for new dates on the golfing calendar, some have suggested it would be better to push the next Ryder Cup back to 2021.

Fleetwood, who leads the European Tour standings, has virtually booked his place on Padraig Harrington's team already if the tournament stays where it is but believes it would be a fairer process if the qualification period were to be extended.

"It would be a shame and feel weird to have to wait for so long after the last Ryder Cup, but you just have to take whatever comes. And it would be fairer in qualification terms for it to be pushed back," Fleetwood told the Times newspaper.

Fleetwood also insists he aims to be ready, both physically and mentally, for when action resumes on the golf course.

"It's not great in terms of practice and playing time, but it will be good for rest and recovery. Hopefully this will never happen again but we have to deal with it," he added.
