Garcia streaks clear in Sun City

8th November 2018, 15:08 by Neil Foster

Sergio Garcia's fine form continued with a first-round eight-under par 64 at the Nedbank Golf Challenge and he leads by four shots.

The 38-year-old, who won the Andalucia Valderrama Masters on his last start, appears to have his confidence back and carded eight birdies in an error-free round at Gary Player CC.

On a tough course, the Spanish Ryder Cup star opened up a four-shot lead over his rivals after the first 18 holes, with Frenchman Mike Lorenzo-Vera, Mikko Korhonen of Finland and South Africa's Charl Schwartzel sitting on -4.

Six players, including home favourite Louis Oosthuizen plus English duo Matt Wallace and Andy Sullivan, are among a group of six on three-under while another home player, Branden Grace, joined New Zealand’s Ryan Fox on -2.

In what is the final event on the European Tour before the season-endings DP World Tour Championship in Dubai, Rory McIlroy could only manage a level-par 72 while 2016 Masters champion Danny Willett had a round to forget, signing for a six-over-par 78.
