Kuch fires 63 to take Waialae lead

12th January 2019, 08:44 by Jack Ogalbe

Matt Kuchar says he is excited about the challenge that awaits over the weekend after taking the halfway lead at the Sony Open.

The 40-year-old continued where he left off on Friday at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu, making the most of the scoring conditions to record a second straight 63.

Kuchar fired six birdies, an eagle and just a solitary bogey to move onto 14-under for 36 holes, one ahead of Andrew Putnam who backed up his opening 62 with a 65.

The 2009 Open Champion Stewart Cink is part of a tie for third, four off the pace, but it was a tough day for overnight leader Adam Svensson, who could only manage a 74 following his opening 61.

After finishing 76th in last year's FedEx Cup Standings, Kuchar has hit back this season, winning November's Mayakoba Golf Classic and is clearly enjoying the test provided by the Hawaiian layout.

"To shoot seven-under back-to-back is unexpected, but certainly awfully exciting," said Kuchar. "I love the golf course. It's a challenging one, but if you play well you can make birdies; if you don't you're going to make bogeys.

"I've been on some good form and I felt really good yesterday, although today probably wasn't quite as clean. I think I hardly missed a fairway yesterday and today missed a handful.

"Boy, the golf course gets tough when you're playing from the rough. Even if you have short clubs in your hand it's challenging."
