Lowry excited after confirming Italy spot
Shane Lowry says he can't wait for the Italian Open next month after confirming he has joined the star-studded field.
Irishman Lowry broke his major duck in sensational fashion in July when winning The 2019 Open Championship, beating Englishman Tommy Fleetwood by a massive six shots at Royal Portrush.
The 32-year-old, who currently leads the Race to Dubai standings on the European Tour this season, has now confirmed he will be making the trip to Olgiata Golf Club for the Italian Open, which runs from October 10-13.
World number 21 Lowry will be joined at the event by 2018 Champion Golfer of the Year Francesco Molinari and the current Claret Jug holder is delighted to be playing with the Italian.
"I'm excited to be back in Italy this year and especially in an amazing city like Rome," he was quoted as saying by the European Tour. "The Italian fans love their sport and to play here as the Open Champion, alongside Fran since his incredible win at Carnoustie, I think it will be a special week.
"I know the Italian Open has been played at Olgiata in the past and I have heard the course is one of the best in the country, so I expect it to be a good challenge and when you are playing against some of the best players in the world, it's always going to be entertaining for the fans as well."
James Mason grew up in Northumberland so is entrenched in both the football and golf scenes. A low handicap golfer, he also follows Newcastle United and predicts big things under Rafa Benitez.
