McIlroy claims £12m prize at East Lake
Rory McIlroy finished the season in style when winning the Tour Championship at East Lake to secure the FedEx Cup title.
McIlroy had been critical of the new format heading into the tournament but was on top form as he carded a final round of 66 to take the title and £12.2million prize fund.
The 30-year-old finished on 18 under par, four shots clear of second-placed Xander Schauffele and five ahead of third-round leader and world number one Brooks Koepka, who he played with in the final round.
"To play like that alongside Brooks and win, it's awesome," said McIlroy immediately after the win.
Speaking to the Golf Channel later on, he added: "My goal today was to win by even strokes. My goal was to shoot the lowest score of the week and I think with the birdie on the last I did that. That's why I was concentrating so much. It's such a cool way to end what has been a great season.
"I'm very proud of this and I'm going to enjoy this one."
American Koepka had held a one-shot lead after the third round but his hopes faded after he hit a double bogey on the seventh and then picked up another three bogeys on the back nine.
