Wallace sets the tempo in Surrey

19th September 2019, 19:53 by Tom Hill

England's Matt Wallace secured the first-round lead at the BMW PGA Championship after a sensational bogey-free round of 65.

The 29-year-old claimed a one-shot lead on Thursday afternoon after making a blistering start at Wentworth.

Wallace sunk three birdie putts and fired home an eagle putt on the fourth, before picking up another two further shots on the back nine.

As expected, the 29-year-old will be under tremendous pressure when he starts Friday's round. Henrik Stenson and Jon Rahm are a shot further back on six-under-par, while Justin Rose is alone in fourth on five-under.

The likes of Danny Willett, Paul Casey and Ernie Els are among a group tied for fifth, but Wallace says he feels comfortable at Wentworth and is ready to add to his lead.

He told the European Tour website: "It's the flagship event of the European Tour.

"I've played the course plenty of times before coming into this week and feel comfortable, and it always helps when your game's in shape, as well.

"It's just good every week. It's not just about this week; it's about the bigger picture in the future.

"I just want to play better, and I want to keep getting better and put myself in positions to win tournaments. It's a good start. We've got a long way to go, though."
