Altior to Give Henderson his Fifth Success in Champion Chase
With Min and Douvan scheduled to take on ALTIOR this looks to be a proper version of this race with three high class contenders going head-to-head.
Altior is unbeaten in races over obstacles and if anything, he’s proved more impressive over fences than he was over hurdles. He seemingly returned as good as ever when taking the Grade 2 Game Spirit Chase with one of today’s rival in Politologue himself no slouch back in second. However, his credentials will face a tough test here with the Mullins duo Min and Douvan.
Douvan flopped in this race last year when a heavy odds-on favourite, losing his unblemished chasing record in the process and it remains to be seen if the old fire and ability is still there. Given that premise it may be that Min provides the bigger threat although Altior dismissed him when they met over hurdles in the 2016 Supreme.
He’s produced some top class performances over the larger obstacles and came back to his very best when winning the Dublin Chase by 12L last time out. In a race that could be run at a strong pace there is always a chance that something will stay out of the heat of the battle and run on late to pick up the pieces and the candidate for that role this time around is God’s Own who stays further than this and connections may be tempted to cast in that role.
