Back A Cyrtainty At Ascot

24th November 2018, 08:22 by Gerard Lees

Potential Top Class Jumper To Take Handicap Chase

A typically difficult Saturday handicap chase confronts us today but Paul Nicholls and CYRNAME can be the answer to the Gerard Bertrand Hurst Park Handicap over two miles and a furlong at Ascot. At six years of age he’s one of the more lightly raced and progressive horses in the field and this could be a stepping stone to better things for the cleverly titled son of Nickname. He has had 13 runs in his career and has managed four wins and as many places, with an early switch to fences after three hurdle races following his move from France. In seven chases, he has won three and been placed twice, with the highlight being a definitive win in last February’s Pendil Chase at Kempton after nearly unseating. He could well turn out to be Grade horse and this event off a mark of 150 looks like an attempt by the yard to land a big handicap prize before moving on to better things. He opened this season's campaign in a Listed race at Carlisle earlier this month and jumped really well under Harry Cobden until fading to be third to Mister Whitaker who ran well in last weekend's Bet Victor. Regular rider Sean Bowen returns in the saddle today, the ground is perfect and Yeat's progeny enjoy going right-handed and are five from 14 at the distance. BTOPlus+ has him top on speed and third on regular ratings and gives him eight positives in total. His stablemate SAN BENEDETO is top on regular ratings and MODUS has lots of positives but the 9/2 on offer for Cyrname on the exchanges is reasonable in a race containing a few with doubts.
