Consistent Sprinter To Get Overdue Win
Conditions Just Right For Tinkler Five-Year-Old
It has been 18 months and 20 races since SHEEPSCAR LAD got his head in front where it matters but he has suitable conditions today to rectify that situation and take gold back to Nigel Tinkler’s North Yorkshire stable. He has run well on many of those occasions, such as when beaten in photo finishes in Class 3 events at Pontefract and Ripon and has actually got five wins to his name.
His last outing was here at Beverley over course and distance at the end of last month when third, beaten under two lengths to Four Wheel Drive, a subsequent Thirsk winner in a better race, carrying 6lbs more. The second, Desert Ace, has been edged out in a photo since, so the form looks excellent. Sheepscar Lad goes off the same mark of 70 today, has the same rider Faye McManoman on board (53% better than expected here), won on good to firm ground a year ago and loves the course (the progeny of his sire Arcano are 21% here).
He has serious rivals in the shape of top-rated ARCHIMEDES, a winner two races ago but who disappointed last week off this mark and EXCESSABLE. The latter is well handicapped, running off his lowest ever mark of 70 (he won off 8lbs more 13 months ago) and caught the eye when a staying-on fourth to Bashiba at Musselburgh earlier this month, wearing a tongue-tie and cheek-pieces for the first time.
Many of the layers have Sheepscar Lad at 9/4 and that looks reasonable.
