Cotton On To Stayer At Lingfield

5th September 2019, 10:40 by Gerard Lees

George Boughey has currently just five horses at his Newmarket yard and one that he owns can get the eighth win of his career this evening.

COTTON CLUB, now entering the veteran stage for a Flat performer, goes in the Follow At The Races On Twitter Handicap with an outstanding chance of achieving a quick double. Boughey is his fourth trainer and he had been at his stables since July when absolutely bolting up at Bath nine days ago. He beat Sacred Sprite over a dozen lengths there off a mark of 68, the same as today, and that filly, despite disappointing since, had been runner-up on her previous outing. The third, and favourite, Contingency Fee has since been placed in a similar event. Cotton Club had run poorly on his previous outing but that was on soft ground, a surface on which his form reads 7,7,9 and then last of 4. Two miles on a sound surface looks his optimum - as he gets today.

Of his five rivals, ANYONECANHAVEITALL looks the best and was an impressive half-a-dozen lengths winner over a mile and six furlongs at Redcar after a break in August. He is the youngest in the field and has possible improvement in him but has disappointed twice since that win, including on a return to Redcar. The progeny of his sire Nathaniel are an encouraging six from 33 at today's course.

OCTOBER STORM is rated second on BTO figures but has a long list of unplaced runs in front of his name and might not really fancy running two miles around Lingfield.

AGE OF WISDOM is coming down to a winning mark after trying to win off 11 lbs more at Goodwood and is being backed but at 6/4, Cotton Club looks a worthy favourite.
