Ex-French Bumper Winner Set For Second UK Victory

6th February 2019, 10:57 by Gerard Lees

Improving Seven-Year-Old Ready To Strike Again

The Venetia Williams trained CHAMBARD looks a slow maturing type with just 11 runs in his seven years, four being for the Herefordshire yard since coming over from France.

Significantly, he was off the course for nearly two years after that transfer and then ran poorly on his British debut before unseating on his second run, last autumn. Things then improved dramatically with a second to subsequent easy Class 2 Sandown winner Monsieur Lecoq being followed by a win at Exeter from previous winner Haldon Hill.

That form is probably good enough to take today's event and improvement is on the cards. Chambard made a mistake at the last there and a better round of jumping would strengthen his case further. Top on regular and second on BTO speed ratings, the gelding is nearly matched on positives by Richard Johnson's mount DORKING BOY but at 7/2 Chambard looks decent in this race and a good future prospect.
