Ludlow Runner-Up Ready To Go One Better

12th January 2019, 09:37 by Gerard Lees

Consistent Type Ready To Get His Head In Front With Conditions To Suit

Brian Hughes is having a remarkable season and has ridden his last three mounts to victory as well as having 10 of his last dozen winning or being placed.

He attempts to carry on in the same vein with KAUTO RIKO in the Wetherbyracing.co.uk Handicap Chase this afternoon. The horse produced his best ever display last time out at Haydock when coming home comfortably from two previous placers, Zalvados and Shear Rock. He was a decent hurdler, with two wins in the winter of 2016/7 but looks a better chaser and seems to be still improving, but both his form and BTO sire stats show him to be very much a soft ground horse.

He is passed over for TREE OF LIBERTY who is second top-rated on BTO regular figures and third on Speed Ratings. He made the well treated Capeland work hard when an excellent second at Ludlow on his seasonal debut last month. That horse was narrowly beaten in a Class 2 at Sandown last weekend.

Tree Of Liberty does go on any ground, having won on good and narrowly beaten on good to firm in a point-to-point. Up just 5lb from Ludlow, he's the selection at 7/2.
