De Sousa facing six weeks out

24th August 2019, 14:59 by Bobbie Jackson

Champion jockey Silvestre de Sousa is set for up to six weeks out of action after suffering a broken collarbone at Chelmsford.

The 38-year-old saddled three rides at York on Friday before heading south to Chelmsford to partner Alnadir in the Irish Lotto At totesport.com Handicap.

But his day ended in dramatic fashion after the three-year-old came down in the five-runner handicap over 10 furlongs.

De Sousa was treated on site before being taken to Addenbrooke Hospital in Cambridge later in the evening.

His agent Shelley Dwyer said on Saturday: "He's back home, he has fractured his collarbone and a couple of vertebra, but it could have been much worse.

"He's battered and bruised and really sore - it was one of those falls that when you saw it you knew it didn't look good.

"At the moment I think we are looking at four to six weeks."
