Footpad back with a bang

21st November 2019, 16:08 by Tom Hill

Footpad made a triumphant return to action after winning the Boomerang.ie Chase at Thurles.

The seven-year-old enjoyed a low-key return as connections try to rediscover his best form.

Willie Mullins' charge looked like he could be a future superstar after winning five races in a row as a novice chaser last season.

However, he fell at Naas in November 2018 and then failed to win at Leopardstown before the end of the year.

He finished eighth in the 2019 Ryanair Chase, but Mullins' charge looked back to his former self after a 252-day absence.

Jockey Daryl Jacob guided him home, and he was quick to praise his charge for a measured approach.

He told reporters: "It is lovely to see the horse back on the racetrack and he had plenty of enthusiasm and jumped and travelled very, very well. It's a great starting point for him, and he never missed a beat the whole way around.

"Today's trip wasn't a problem for him and ideally going a little bit quicker early doors would have suited him, but he is nice and fresh, and it was good to see a performance like that this early in the year.

"It was mission accomplished today."
