Newbury have contingency plans in place

8th February 2019, 12:08 by Gareth Freeman

Newbury racecourse say they have "necessary contingencies" in place for abandonments after racing was suspended due to equine flu.

The British Horse Racing Authority has suspended racing until at least next Wednesday due to the outbreak of equine flu.

Saturday’s meeting at Newbury, where the Betfair Hurdle was the feature race, is the highest-profile casualty but the racecourse remains philosophical over the cancellation.

Newbury's head of communications Harriet Collins said: "Unfortunately we are a sport which is prone to adverse weather and abandonments happen slightly more frequently over the winter.

"As a result, we have put in the necessary contingencies ahead of racing so insurances are in place and all our ticket purchasers will be receiving notification that they will be refunded within the next 14 days."
