Hughes hopes for England chance

17th April 2019, 14:32 by Gareth Freeman

Watford midfielder Will Hughes hopes to force his way into the England squad but believes he faces an uphill battle.

Hughes managed 22 appearances for the England Under-21 squad and featured during current England boss Gareth Southgate's time in charge of the youth squad.

The Hornets star hopes he can force his way into Southgate's plans although the 23-year-old is well aware the competition for places is fierce.

He told the Times: "I want to be called up [by England]. I want to play. I'm massively patriotic.

"If a call-up does come, I will be ecstatic but, if they keep playing the way they are, I've got to watch and enjoy it.

"There are technical players coming in faster than me. [Callum] Hudson-Odoi and Jadon Sancho have technical ability as well as physical attributes. I'm not bitter about it."
