Suarez issues Messi backing

6th December 2019, 11:24 by Alex Jack

Barcelona striker Luis Suarez believes the Blaugrana will have many more seasons to enjoy the talents of the great Lionel Messi.

There has been some speculation regarding Messi’s long-term future after his speech at the Ballon d’Or awards this week.

The Argentina international said he knows “retirement is approaching” after picking up the award for the sixth time in his illustrious career.

“And I enjoy these moments so much because I know that retirement is approaching. Time flies,” Messi said at the awards ceremony.

At the age of 32, some have questioned how long Messi will continue to play for but team-mate Suarez is adamant his fellow forward has many more years ahead of him and will not be retiring any time soon.

“I think [Messi’s comments] were misunderstood,” Suarez told beIN Sports. “First because you have to understand that Leo had just received a new Ballon d’Or [award] at that time, and he was happy and nervous because he is a human being like us.

“Messi will be around for a long time.”

Having score a late winner in the 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid last time out there seems to be no stopping Messi as he looks to help Barcelona retain their La Liga crown.

The Blaugrana are next in action on Saturday when they play hosts to a Real Mallorca side who have only managed four wins in their 15 La Liga outings this season and currently reside in 17th place in the table.
