Tokyo 2020 a target for Cav

17th September 2019, 00:25 by Michael Holland

Mark Cavendish says he would be interested in racing at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

Cavendish was disappointed to be left out of the Tour de France this summer by Team Dimension Data, but he has put that behind him and is looking forward.

The 34-year-old prepares to return to the track at Six Day London, which begins in October, and says it would be the perfect preparation for Tokyo 2020.

Cavendish could target a first Olympic gold in the madison when it returns to the Games next year.

"Riding the madison at Tokyo is still an interest," he told BBC Sport. "Any time on the track is good preparation for it and Six Day racing is good because it stays true to the foundations of madison racing."

Cavendish took part in the Tour of Britain last week, but says returning to the track interests him.

"I like riding on the track, it complements my road riding," he added. "I have to build up over the next couple of weeks because a bit more intensity comes in racing against guys that have been training on the track for a while now.

"It's never easy to transition from road to track - but, having done it for many years, I know what to do."
