Southampton v Liverpool

4th April 2019, 13:59 by James Mason

Liverpool will be looking to move back to the top of the Premier League when they make the trip to Southampton on Friday.

Manchester City's 2-0 victory at home to Cardiff City on Wednesday night moved the defending champions into first place, putting the pressure back on second-place Liverpool, who are one point behind the table-toppers.

The Reds are on a four-game winning run heading into the clash at St Mary's after edging past Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 last time out and they title-challengers are unbeaten in their last six matches away from home in all competitions.

In a huge positive for Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp has confirmed Netherlands international Virgil van Dijk has recovered from the knock he sustained against Spurs and is available for selection.

Barring midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and defender Joe Gomez, the visitors have no injury concerns ahead of the contest and will be feeling confident of picking up all three points.

Southampton are still battling against relegation, with five points the gap between themselves and 18th-place Cardiff, but the Saints are in great form after winning three of their last four matches.

Victories over Fulham, Spurs and Brighton have put Ralph Hasenhuttl's men closer to safety and home form has been crucial to the upturn in results, with just one league defeat suffered from the last five at St Mary's.

The Saints will be without striker Danny Ings, who is ineligible to play against his parent club, but defender Jannik Vestergaard and forward Shane Long have both returned to training.

Liverpool are unbeaten in the last four meetings with Southampton, winning three and drawing one.
