Tranmere Rovers v Tottenham Hotspur

3rd January 2019, 12:53 by Jack Ogalbe

The third round of the FA Cup kicks off on Friday night as Tottenham travel to Prenton Park to face League Two side Tranmere.

Rovers had a spell of being cup sensations, losing out to Leicester in the final of the League Cup in 2000, the last final of that tournament to be played at the Old Wembley.

The following season they went on to reach the FA Cup quarter-final, taking the scalps of Everton and Southampton before eventually falling vicitim to Liverpool.

Since then times have been hard for Tranmere, with financial difficulties resulting in them dropping out of the Football League but promotion last season from the National League saw them return to the pyramid and they sit ninth in League Two after taking five points from their last three.

Boss Micky Mellon is expected to use a three-man back-line to make life tough for the visitors who have not always had it their own way in this competition and were taken to replays by both Newport and Rochdale in last season's competition.

However, they are riding high this term, a 3-0 win at Cardiff on Tuesday seeing Tottenham rise back to second in the Premier League, although that could change with Manchester City facing Liverpool on Thursday evening.

After a busy festive period, Spurs are set to rotate their team with the likes of Paulo Gazzaniga, Fernando Llorente and youngster Oliver Skipp set for rare starts.

It could be a tricky tie for the Lilywhites, with Tranmere having won eight of their 13 league matches at Prenton Park this season. However, Mauricio Pochettino's men are unbeaten in their last five on the road, with a draw away at Barcelona the only time during that run they have not tasted victory.
