Brighton & Hove Albion 0-5 Bournemouth

13th April 2019, 17:05 by Mark Race

Brighton face a crunch relegation battle against Cardiff City on Tuesday after slumping to a 5-0 home defeat to Bournemouth.

The Cherries, who have lost 14 away games this season, have now completed the double over Chris Hughton’s team as they also recorded a 2-0 victory on home soil in December.

Brighton created the first opening of the encounter but Yves Bissouma’s weak shot failed to trouble Artur Boruc, while at the other end Callum Wilson toe-poked the ball wide from Ryan Fraser’s low cross.

The Cherries should have broken the deadlock in the 15th minute but Josh King failed to guide his header on target after Nathan Ake had got to the byline and chipped the ball to the Norwegian.

Seagulls striker Florin Andone narrowly failed to latch on to Davy Propper’s cross before the Cherries took the lead in the 33rd minute when Dan Gosling scored his first goal of the season.

The midfielder exchanged passes with Wilson before guiding a low shot past Mat Ryan and the visitors almost doubled their advantage just before half-time when Steve Cook’s shot forced the Brighton goalkeeper to make a good save.

Bournemouth did make it 2-0 nine minutes after the restart when a swift counter-attack ended with Fraser’s right-footed shot from just outside the penalty area beating Ryan.

King curled a shot narrowly wide before Hughton’s team were reduced to 10 men in the 67th minute when Anthony Knockaert was shown a straight red card for a terrible tackle on Adam Smith.

Bournemouth confirmed their superiority with three more goals in the last 18 minutes as Brighton wilted.

The third goal for Eddie Howe’s team was scored by David Brooks, who latched on to a pass from Fraser before calmly slotting the ball home, while Wilson finished off another good move by the visitors to make it 4-0.

In stoppage time the rout was completed by Junior Stanislas, who lashed the ball home after being set up by Brooks as Brighton suffered an embarrassing defeat just a week after playing Manchester City at Wembley in the semi-finals of the FA Cup.
