Burnley 2-0 Cardiff City

13th April 2019, 17:08 by Mark Race

Burnley appear to be safe from relegation after beating Cardiff City 2-0 at Turf Moor for their third Premier League victory in a row.

The Clarets dominated the first half but Cardiff improved after the break and were a little unfortunate not to pick up a point from the game.

Burnley, who scored an early goal in their recent home victory against Wolves, almost made another perfect start when, in the second minute, Chris Wood headed against a post when he should have broken the deadlock.

In the 11th minute Bluebirds goalkeeper Neil Etheridge had to keep Ashley Westwood’s curling corner out, while at the other end the hard-working Josh Murphy had a shot saved by Tom Heaton.

Clarets youngster Dwight McNeil fired in a 20-yard shot that flew just over the bar before Ashley Westwood was sent clean through by Wood, only to poke a weak shot straight at Etheridge.

Sean Dyche’s team deservedly opened the scoring in the 31st minute when an unmarked Wood headed McNeil's corner past Etheridge.

Cardiff were second best throughout the first half and they almost fell further behind five minutes later, but overworked Bluebirds goalkeeper Etheridge denied Westwood after he had been played in by Ashley Barnes.

Neil Warnock’s side thought they had been handed a lifeline in the 48th minute when Mike Dean awarded them a penalty after Ben Mee had handled the ball, only for the referee to then change his mind after speaking to his assistant.

Cardiff were much better in the second half and they should have equalised soon after the hour mark when Junior Hoilett lashed his shot over the bar from a great position.

Etheridge remained busy at the other end and had to be alert to keep out efforts by Barnes, Mee and Wood. Burnley finally finished the visitors off in stoppage time when Wood headed McNeil’s low cross home to leave Cardiff five points away from safety with five games of the campaign remaining.
