Arsenal linked with midfielder return bid

17th April 2019, 08:50 by Michael Holland

Arsenal could re-sign former midfielder Ismael Bennacer as a replacement for Aaron Ramsey.

The 21-year-old currently plays his football in Serie A with Empoli, who he joined in 2017 after making just one first-team appearance for the Gunners in a two-year spell.

The midfielder has gone on to flourish and reports are now rife suggesting that Gunners boss Unai Emery is keen to bring him back to the Emirates Stadium.

Italian side Napoli are being heavily linked and are ready to pay £13.8million to sign him. However, Arsenal could land him for just £3.45million after having the nous to include a buy-back option in the deal that took him to Empoli.

Such foresight looks set to save the Gunners a fortune, and with money tight at the Emirates, it is much-welcomed news.

Emery will need to replace Juventus-bound Ramsey, and he seems to be seriously considering bringing Bennacer back for a second, and hopefully more successful, spell.
