Emery wants more from new recruits

11th September 2019, 15:05 by Dan McCarthy

Unai Emery admits he would like to see even more from his new recruits and hopes for a more “settled” team from now on.

The Gunners have had a reasonable start to the new season after picking up seven points in their first 12 games.

They defeated both Newcastle and Burnley by one-goal margins in the first two games before life got significantly tougher against Liverpool and Tottenham.

Arsenal were outclassed at Anfield in the former, losing 3-1, though did take positives from the performance due to their ability to counter-attack.

Then, against their arch-rivals Spurs, they came from 2-0 down to finish the game 2-2 just before the international break.

The club spent heavily in the summer to try and get their squad back in the Champions League with Emery’s team currently lying fifth in the table.

One of those signings included record purchase Nicolas Pepe who came in from Lille for a fee thought to be around £72million.

David Luiz came in as well from Chelsea in a surprise deadline day capture for £8million though, was culpable for the penalty conceded at Anfield which put the game beyond Arsenal’s reach.

Dani Ceballos has shown glimpses of his ability while Kieran Tierney has not been able to play due to injury and Gabriel Martinelli is a youngster, who despite featuring this term, was mainly bought for the future.

However, ahead of the Gunners’ game away at Watford on Sunday, Emery is calling for more from his new additions and also a better balance between attack and defence.

“First we need to improve the adaptation of the different players who have come here in the last moments,” Emery told the official Arsenal website. “Also we need to improve in our way. For example, I think we can continue being very offensive with a lot of important offensive players.

“We also want to take the balance defensively to be strong and I think the first four matches allowed us to show our first characteristic – to be offensive.”
