Gunners confirm Tierney blow

11th December 2019, 14:13 by Tom McGarry

Arsenal have confirmed full-back Kieran Tierney faces a spell on the sidelines after suffering a dislocated shoulder.

Scotland international Tierney has had fitness concerns ever since arriving at the Emirates Stadium from Celtic during the summer, joining the club already nursing a hip injury that has limited his involvement over the first half of the campaign.

Indeed, Tierney has only featured 11 times for the Gunners, while Monday’s appearance against West Ham at the London Stadium was just the fifth time he has started a match in the Premier League.

The 22-year-old’s involvement in that fixture did not last long, however, as he was forced off after just 29 minutes following an awkward fall in the penalty area.

Arsenal have now confirmed Tierney suffered a dislocated shoulder during that incident, which means he faces another spell on the treatment table, although the club are yet to discover the full extent of the damage.

“Kieran Tierney dislocated his right shoulder during the West Ham United (a) match. Currently undergoing further assessment and investigations,” the club confirmed on their official website.

Tierney will, therefore, play no part in Thursday’s Europa League clash with Standard Liege in Belgium, while his involvement over the busy festive period has also been called into question.

Arsenal’s 3-1 victory over West Ham ended their nine-match winless run across all competitions, but they remain ninth in the table, seven points off the top-four positions.

The Gunners’ resolve will be tested further over the festive period, as they will take on the likes of Manchester City, Everton, Chelsea and Manchester United between now and New Year’s Day.

If Tierney is missing for all those games then it is likely Sead Kolasinac, who replaced the Scot against West Ham, will fill the void at left-back in his absence.
