Suarez to Arsenal move put on hold
Arsenal have reportedly made signing a defender their new priority for January, putting a deal for Barcelona's Denis Suarez on hold.
The Gunners are thought to have reached an agreement with Barca over a deal for Suarez which will see him join on loan initially, with an obligation to make the switch permanent for £22million come the summer.
Arsenal are keen to get the Spanish midfielder on board but are delaying confirmation of Suarez, having decided to pursue a defender.
The north London outfit were already looking to improve their backline, having found it tough to keep clean sheets so far this season, with Saturday's 2-0 win over Chelsea being just the fourth shut out they have achieved under Unai Emery.
The season-ending knee injury suffered by Hector Bellerin in the triumph over the Blues has only heightened the urgency for defensive cover and that has become the pressing matter for the club heading into the closing stages of the January transfer window.
With loan deals the only option for Arsenal, the club are reluctant to commit to a deal for Suarez before knowing how much they will need to potentially spend to get a defender through the door at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal hope to have completed all their transfer business by the end of this week in order to avoid any deadline-day drama.
