Wilshere tips Holding for Arsenal role

12th July 2019, 16:02 by James Mason

Ex-Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has backed Rob Holding to become a future captain of the Gunners.

With current skipper Laurent Koscielny eager to secure a summer exit, manager Unai Emery looks like he will have to appoint a new captain ahead of the 2019-20 Premier League season.

Neither Aaron Ramsey nor Petr Cech are at the club anymore, while German midfielder Mesut Ozil continues to divide opinion and may be overlooked for a role that brings huge responsibility.

Englishman Wilshere, who left the Emirates last summer to join West Ham United on a free, has now backed compatriot Holding to be handed the armband in the future.

He told football.london: "Arsenal will have Rob Holding coming back and Hector [Bellerin]. They did their cruciate – and sometimes when you do your cruciate you actually come back stronger – because you have to work on your strength and quads which actually strengthen you more.

"Rob Holding was playing so well before he got injured and will be a great addition to their defence once he's fit again. I really think he could be a potential Arsenal captain of the future."
