Aston Villa 1-2 Bournemouth

18th August 2019, 09:44

Aston Villa have started the new season with back-to-back defeats after Bournemouth claimed a 2-1 triumph at Villa Park on Saturday.

It was the worst possible start for Dean Smith’s side as, with less than two minutes on the clock, Villa goalkeeper Tom Heaton upended Callum Wilson in the penalty area.

Josh King calmly converted the resulting spot-kick to make it 1-0 and the Cherries quickly doubled that advantage 10 minutes later, with Harry Wilson grabbing a debut goal as he capitalised on a mistake from Douglas Luiz before seeing his long-range strike deflect off Tyrone Mings and into the back of the net.

Villa looked vulnerable at the back every time Bournemouth came forward, but as the first half developed, they finally started creating chances of their own, with John McGinn, Wesley and Trezeguet all seeing shots saved by the impressive Aaron Ramsdale in the Cherries goal.

Both sides had penalty of appeals turned down at the start of the second half, with referee Martin Atkinson happy to adopt a lenient approach, something that VAR did nothing to overturn.

Villa were the better side for the majority of the second period, but it looked like it wasn’t going to be their day as Jack Grealish headed over from close range and Neil Taylor saw an effort deflect wide of the target.

However, Villa’s pressure finally told and in spectacular fashion, as Luiz, on his first start for the club, curled an effort into the top corner from fully 20 yards out.

That could have easily have sent Bournemouth into panic stations, but the Cherries managed the rest of the game well and they could have added a third late on had Heaton not saved Ryan Fraser’s close-range effort.
