Heaton upbeat despite tough start

4th September 2019, 10:25 by Dan McCarthy

Aston Villa goalkeeper Tom Heaton insists there is a positive atmosphere at the club despite a difficult return to the top flight.

After four games, Villa sit 18th in the table after one victory and three defeats.

They started the season with a 3-1 loss away at Tottenham despite leading the game thanks to John McGinn’s goal.

They then went down 2-1 at home to Bournemouth before finally picking up a win when they took on Everton at Villa Park.

Their fourth game, a 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace, was shrouded in controversy as a late Henri Lansbury goal was ruled out as Jack Grealish was deemed to have dived in the build-up, and VAR did not review the incident.

Despite vast sums spent in the summer, the Villans have yet to get going even though there was much optimism coming into their first Premier League campaign for three years.

Heaton was one of those signings as he was brought in from Burnley for a fee of around £8million.

However, he is adamant that everyone at the club is still on a high and they will naturally

“Overall it has been a good first month, albeit we have won one game and been beaten in three,” he said.

“There are a lot of positives to take from it which we can use moving forward. I don’t think there is any real fear, no worry. There are building blocks being put in place here.”

Much was made of Villa’s spending spree in the summer, with parallels drawn to Fulham who were in a similar situation last season.

They were the second biggest spenders in the entire transfer window in the Premier League, with only Manchester United more liberal with the chequebook.

New recruits included the permanent addition of Tyrone Mings, who was handed his first call up to the England squad this week, and record signing Wesley Moraes, who scored for the first time in the Everton win.

Heaton was a surprise signing, with Burnley allowing the England man to depart the club for a relatively cheap fee and he has managed to retain his spot in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the upcoming games against Bulgaria and Kosovo at Wembley and St Mary’s respectively.

After the internationals, Villa will be hoping to grab their second win of the season when they take on West Ham at home on Monday 16 September.
