Cook wants VAR

13th March 2018, 16:42 by Bobbie Jackson

Bournemouth defender Steve Cook believes referees need to be supported by VAR after some poor decisions over the weekend.

The Cherries fell to a 4-1 defeat at home to Tottenham on Sunday but Cook feels the game should have been much tighter.

Son Heung-min put Spurs 2-1 ahead on 62 minutes but he looked to be offside when found by Dele Alli, while referee Mike Dean then ruled out Callum Wilson’s strike for a push, despite there being minimal contact on Davinson Sanchez, which would have seen Bournemouth get back on level terms.

Cook feels Bournemouth have been on the wrong end of a few poor decisions over recent weeks and has urged the authorities to introduce VAR on a permanent basis to provide some extra support.

"You do feel if we get the technology in the Premier League, it will maybe eradicate the decisions. We've been on the wrong side of a few bad decisions over the past few weeks and it does cost you points," Cook said.

"I think the officials need that help because they have the hardest job in football. It's extremely difficult for them because the game is played at such a quick pace.

"You don't want to lose the game. It is exciting and full of controversy. That's the game I used to enjoy watching very much but when you are playing and are on the wrong side of decisions, it's hard.

"I think we have to find the right balance. VAR hasn't covered itself in glory over the past couple of months and it's probably only natural because it's new.

"But if they can get it up to scratch, I think it's something the game needs. As long as it doesn't ruin the game for fans, it's something I'm open to."
