Howe praises Cook

28th January 2019, 10:36 by Nick Harris

Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe says Steve Cook should be proud after becoming the stand-in skipper.

The defender has stood in for regular skipper Simon Francis after he suffered a serious knee injury on Boxing Day and is expected to be out of the side for a lengthy period.

Cook has stepped in and captained the club in every game this year ahead of Andrew Surman, who could have been asked to skipper the side but is not making the starting XI at the minute.

Howe is pleased with Cook and told the Daily Echo: "He is someone who can be very proud of his journey as a person and who he is today.

"Cookie has been a leader of the team even though he hasn’t (permanently) had the armband. I have felt that for a long time with him.

"He is a very good talker in the changing room and on the pitch, which is hugely important.

"He has grown and developed his personality as time has gone through.

"He is very consistent with his training performances and is very professional in how he prepares.

"There are definite leadership qualities and it’s great to see him with that armband."
