New Cherries man absent for opening game

10th August 2018, 11:40 by Daniel McCarthy

New Bournemouth signing Jefferson Lerma will not be involved for their opening game at home to Cardiff.

The Colombian became the club’s record signing this week after joining for a fee believed to be around £25million from Spanish La Liga side Levante.

However, the 23-year-old figured four times for his country during the World Cup in Russia, and has barely had chance to train with his new team-mates, and Howe says he will have to wait for his debut.

"Jefferson is not being considered at this stage," he said at his pre-match press conference.

"There will be other players involved in the World Cup who won't play this weekend. We need to make sure that when Jefferson steps on the pitch he's absolutely ready to perform at the top level.

"He's had one training session with us and has come to us on the back of not training after the World Cup, so we'll need his build his fitness up as he acclimatises with the squad.”

The only other players missing will be Junior Stanislas, who is out for another month with injury, and new left-back Diego Rico, who is suspended.
