Albion set to miss out on midfield target

31st January 2019, 09:49 by Gareth Freeman

Brighton are unlikely to land long-term target Luca Connell on deadline day as they are unwilling to match Bolton's valuation.

Albion are understood to have been keeping tabs on the 17-year-old for around 18 months and The Argus claims they have submitted an offer, which remains on the table.

However, Brighton's bid falls below Bolton's valuation and after the youngster forced his way into the first-team picture at the University of Bolton Stadium it seems as if the Championship club will stand firm and hold out for a bigger offer, despite their well publicised financial concerns.

The Seagulls will have to up their bid if they are to stand a chance of snaring Connell this month and Wanderers boss Phil Parkinson expects the Republic of Ireland youth international to remain with the club.

He told the Bolton News: "He will be here at the end of the week. There will be people watching him, obviously.

"When you are a young player making a debut on Friday, play so well, then back it up with another good performance, of course that will happen.

"He’s a great player and we are looking forward to seeing him here for a long time to come, hopefully."

If Brighton were to sign Connell he would go into the youth set-up rather than challenge for first team action.

Albion may opt to resurrect their interest in the summer if they do fail to land the youngster this month.
