Hornets opener too soon for Andone and Izquierdo

10th August 2018, 07:36 by Craig Smithson

New signing Florin Andone and Jose Izquierdo will both miss Brighton's Premier League opener against Watford at Vicarage Road.

Romanian forward Andone has a groin injury, while Colombian winger Izquierdo has been given extra time to gain fitness following his involvement at the World Cup.

"Andone is still not quite there, we expect him to train tomorrow or Monday, and Izquierdo hasn't quite made it," said boss Chris Hughton.

However, the Seagulls will have Jurgen Locadia and Glenn Murray available despite the duo suffering injuries in the recent friendlies against AFC Wimbledon and Nantes respectively.

Hughton added: "Glenn's fine, he is back training. He went for a ball the day before the Nantes game, whacked his back and neck, started the game and probably if he's had another 24 hours he'd have been okay. Locadia is fine."

Looking ahead to the start of the season, he said: "It’s a difficult start; you look at the first seven games and we’ve got four of the top six.

"But the first one to think about is away to Watford on Saturday and trying to get a result there. We will go into every game looking to get something, but the challenges are to concede fewer goals from set plays and improve away to the top six.

"We were very good at home, but can we improve away from home? There are a lot of good challenges for us."
