Potter predicts impressive youth performances

12th July 2019, 14:46 by James Mason

Graham Potter is adamant some of the younger players in Brighton's squad will impress during the club's pre-season build-up.

Potter took charge at the AMEX Stadium this summer, replacing the sacked Chris Hughton, and the new manager arrives with a reputation for giving youth a shot, having done so to good effect at Oostersunds and also Swansea.

The 44-year-old has added some of the club's younger players to the Seagulls' pre-season plans, with summer signings Leandro Trossard and Matt Clarke, who are both in their early 20s, involved.

Speaking ahead of the new Premier League campaign, Potter says he expects some of the younger players to grasp this opportunity with both hands.

He told The Argus: "It's a bit of both. Clubs use that as a nice opportunity to get an understanding of what's coming through the academy and the 23s. There can be some nice surprises in that process and some of the guys have impressed to be honest.

"It's good to see them among the first-team group, with the caveat that it's still pre-season, but you can see the quality is there. They've just got to carry on taking the next step. Young players are good, it's a nice feeling for everybody.

"I think the supporters appreciate a young player in the team, but we know it's the Premier League and we know the competition is tough. It doesn't really matter how old they are, it's whether they can help us win the game, be competitive. That's the challenge."
