Clarets ace earns call-up that could lead to Toulon

15th March 2019, 09:41 by Simon Barlow

Dwight McNeil has received his first international call-up with the Clarets midfielder named in the England Under-20 squad.

The teenager, who moved to Burnley from Old Trafford in 2014, did train with the young Three Lions squad ahead of their 2-0 Elite League win over Germany in November as a stand-by player.

But England Under-20 head coach Paul Simpson has now drafted McNeil, who has started the last 11 games for Sean Dyche's side in the Premier League, into the squad.

And a good showing from McNeil against Poland at St George's Park on Thursday, March 21 or in Portugal five days later could earn him a spot in the group that will head to France for this summer's Toulon tournament.

"We’re going into these games with a very strong squad," said Simpson.

"It’s a very similar squad to our previous camps this season, apart from a few players successfully going up to the U21s, and it’s good to have that consistency.

"We’re expecting two tough games. Poland are coming with their U21 Talent ID group and Portugal are recognised as one of the best U20 teams in Europe, so we know that these matches will be a good test for us.

"The main objectives for us is for our players to continue their development in international football, along with preparing for this summer’s Toulon Tournament."
