Magpies join McNeil race

16th April 2019, 16:20 by Tom Hill

Burnley's Dwight McNeil is reportedly on Newcastle United's radar ahead of the summer transfer window

The 19-year-old has enjoyed a superb breakthrough campaign this season, with the youngster making 17 appearances in the top flight.

McNeil has also chipped in with three goals and he has helped the Clarets move away from the drop zone in recent weeks.

Burnley have won the last three matches to all but secure their Premier League status and McNeil is thought to be a big part of Sean Dyche's plans heading into next season.

However, Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez has now targeted the Rochdale-born midfielder as he tries to boost his squad in the summer.

McNeil signed a new contract in January until 2023 but Newcastle are now desperate to beat Manchester City, Arsenal and Everton to his signature.

Burnley have tended to sell their best players in the past but with McNeil just starting out, they are willing to stand firm as they try to plan for the future after their relegation scare this season.
