Pope deserving of World Cup call - Dyche

16th May 2018, 18:07 by Bobbie Jackson

Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope is fully deserving of his place in England's World Cup squad, according to Sean Dyche.

The stopper has enjoyed an incredible rise during 2017-18, having previously been back-up to Tom Heaton, he took full advantage of his opportunity to deputise.

Pope only made his Premier League debut in September and he has since gone on to win his maiden international call-up and subsequently a place in Gareth Southgate's final 23-man World Cup squad.

Dyche feels Pope has matured massively this term and has backed his stopper to impress in Russia if he gets the opportunity.

"What a season Nick has had and to be in the main squad speaks for itself in terms of the season he's had," Dyche told Burnley's official website.

"He not only come in and did a great job in the early days of Tom Heaton being injured, but actually made it hard for Tom to get back through very good performances.

"That's been recognised by his Player of the Year award, internationally and now by a squad call-up for a World Cup Finals, which is fantastic for him and us.

"I think he has already shown that he is maturing as a player and has certainly matured into the Premier League over the season.

"The original international recognition was a great thing in itself, but to now take it to the next level is fantastic.

"We can use all the words we want, but it's the marvel of football sometimes and Nick's is a great story."

Meanwhile, Heaton and central defender James Tarkowski have been named on the standby list by Southgate.
