Taylor inks new Clarets deal

19th November 2019, 13:39 by Gareth Freeman

Defender Charlie Taylor has signed a new long-term deal with Burnley and is now tied down to the club until 2024.

Taylor, who made the move to East Lancashire from Leeds United two years ago, is “delighted” to have agreed fresh terms with the Clarets.

“I feel it’s a very stable club. It’s been in the Premier League now for a few years,” he told the club’s official website. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time here so far and I’m looking forward to the next few years ahead.”

Taylor added that he hopes the next few years are the “peak years of my career” and he has signed the new deal as he doesn’t “want to go anywhere else”.

The 26-year-old has struggled for regular game time at Turf Moor this term, starting just once in the Premier League so far.

Erik Pieters, a summer arrival from Championship outfit Stoke, had been ahead of him in the Clarets’ pecking order but manager Sean Dyche is a big fan of the former Leeds full-back and recently backed him to earn a place in the England squad in the near future.

Taylor managed 38 Premier League appearances last season, with 35 coming as starts, and will be looking to reclaim his place in the first XI after putting pen to paper on his new deal.

Taylor concedes his lack of action this term has been “frustrating” but he was handed a starting spot in the 3-0 win over West Ham last time out and feels he can force his way back into Dyche’s first XI going forward.

He added: “We have a very competitive squad, which bodes well for now and the future, and I’m delighted that I’m going to be part of it for the future.”
