Wood joins Barnes in penning long-term Clarets extension

8th November 2019, 17:36 by Chris Rivers

Chris Wood has followed in the footsteps of his Burnley strike partner Ashley Barnes by signing a new long-term contract that will run until 2023.

The Clarets announced on Thursday that they had agreed an extension with Barnes, who is the club’s all-time leading scorer in the Premier League.

Much of Barnes’ success in front of goal has come when playing alongside New Zealand international Wood, the pair sharing 41 top-flight goals between them in Wood’s two seasons at Turf Moor.

The 27-year-old was signed from Leeds for a then club-record fee of £15million in the summer of 2017 and has adapted well to life in Lancashire.

Having previously only had a brief taste of Premier League action when at Leicester City earlier in his career, a more mature Wood has netted double figures in both his campaigns with Burnley.

He’s scored 10 league goals in both campaigns thus far and will fancy his chances of equalling or bettering his previous tally having scored four in nine appearances this season.

Having netted a total of 28 goals in 82 appearances in all competitions, the north-west outfit have seen fit to hand him a new long-term deal and Wood is very happy to have found a team in which he feels settled.

“I haven’t really settled down previously at clubs. I think two-and-a-half is the maximum I’ve been at a club so hopefully to be here for four, five, six, seven years would be lovely,” he told the club website.

Wood will be hoping to renew his strike partnership with Barnes this weekend when West Ham came to Turf Moor having missed the last two games through injury.

The former Leeds and Leicester man is pleased he will have Barnes up alongside him for the foreseeable future, claiming both are desperate to do well for Burnley.

“It’s great news for both of us as strikers. It’s always nice to be recognised and it’s fantastic that it’s over the line and sealed,” added Wood.
