Abraham set for Chelsea deal reward

Tammy Abraham is set to be rewarded for his strong start to the season by being handed a new contract extension at Chelsea.

Tammy Abraham is set to be rewarded for his strong start to the season by being handed a new contract extension at Chelsea.

The 21-year-old striker is finally being given a chance to shine at Stamford Bridge having spent the past three seasons away on loan.

Abraham scored an impressive 26 goals in 48 appearances for Championship side Bristol City in 2016-17 which prompted Chelsea to loan him to Premier League Swansea the following season.

However, that move turned sour when he managed just five league goals in 31 outings as the South Wales outfit were relegated from the top flight.

Abraham again dropped down to the second-tier last term and rediscovered his touch in front of goal with 25 goals in 37 Championship games at Aston Villa.

He played an integral part in helping Villa secure promotion back to the Premier League via the play-offs and had looked like staying put.

But, with Frank Lampard taking over from Maurizio Sarri as boss and the Londoners hampered by a transfer ban, Abraham has now got his chance to shine for Chelsea.

And, having gone close to finding the net in the opening two league games, the Camberwell-born star bagged a brace in Saturday’s 3-2 win at Norwich.

It was the first three-point haul of Lampard’s tenure and the manager did not hold back in his praise of the youngster as he described him as a “goalscorer who is hungry for goals” and “constantly wanting to score”.

Hopes are high that brace will open the floodgates and Abraham, who previously signed a five-year deal in 2017, is set to have more faith shown in him in the form of a new contract.

There has also been talk of the striker stepping back up to Gareth Southgate’s senior England squad at some point in the future.

He made two senior appearances back in 2017 but has primarily been a part of the Under-21s set-up.

However, it seems Abraham is ready to try and thrust himself back into Three Lions’ squad on the back his club form.

He said: “I know I have had a bit of a sticky time at the start of the season, but I’m someone who doesn’t let that affect me. It drives me on. Now I have scored two good goals and hopefully I can keep scoring for Chelsea.

“This is football at the end of the day. You just have to enjoy it as much as you can. It’s not a long career, so while you’re out there you just have to give your best and just enjoy it.”
