Alonso - Chelsea must capitalise on rivals slipping up

1st January 2019, 16:55 by Tom McGarry

Marcos Alonso hopes Chelsea can capitalise on their rivals dropping points by claiming a victory of their own against Southampton.

The Blues responded to their December 22 loss to Leicester with wins at Watford and Crystal Palace, while Manchester City, Tottenham and Arsenal have all dropped points amid the congested run of fixtures.

"It's very difficult. You don't have time for training, you can only play and have a good rest to get ready for the next one," Alonso told Chelsea TV.

"We're seeing in the other fixtures it's very difficult. Most of the teams are dropping points. It's very important to get the three points."

Chelsea will fancy their chances of beating Southampton on Wednesday as they have won their last seven games against the Saints, including a 3-0 victory at St Mary’s earlier in the season.

Southampton’s last win in the fixture came at Stamford Bridge in October 2015 when they claimed a 3-1 victory.
