Barkley backs Mount for Euro 2020
Ross Barkley is convinced Chelsea team-mate Mason Mount will be included in England’s Euro 2020 squad.
Mount has established himself as a key man in the Blues’ midfield this season under new boss Frank Lampard.
The midfielder impressed on loan at Derby County in the Championship last season, with Lampard then the Rams boss, and is now making a name for himself in the Premier League with two goals in four appearances so far this term.
Mount is yet to make his England debut but will have a chance this month as he is in the Three Lions’ squad for the Euro 2020 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Kosovo.
Barkley feels Mount is a similar type of player to Lampard, who made 106 appearances for England between 1999 and 2014, and expects his club team-mate to be in the England squad next summer.
“I believe he will be in the squad 100 per cent when it comes to it,” Barkley said, as reported by the Evening Standard.
“Then it is down to him but I believe he will be [in the team] because of how good he is and the things I have seen this season.
“The way he arrives in the box and gets shots away early, it is similar to Lamps. He has a really good technique with how he finishes as well. He is a brilliant player.”
Mount has been in England boss Gareth Southgate’s thoughts for some time and was called up to the senior team for the UEFA Nations League matches against Croatia and Spain last October, but he wasn’t handed a debut.
The 20-year-old has been involved in the England youth set-up at various levels up to and including the Under-21s and will be eager to make a first appearance for the senior side against either Bulgaria or Kosovo.
Mount and Barkley are the only Chelsea players in Southgate’s latest 25-man squad and the latter will be looking to add to his 29 caps and four goals to date.
Mount is one of four uncapped players in the England squad for the Euro 2020 qualifying double header, with Manchester United’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings and midfielder James Maddison of Leicester also pushing for international debuts this month.
