Blues’ stopper Hector set for New Year Cottage move

5th September 2019, 19:29 by Craig Smithson

Michael Hector is relishing his January switch to Fulham after Chelsea agreed to offload him for an undisclosed fee.

The Jamaica international has become a classic case of a player opting to risk regular first-team football at a lower league club in search of Premier League stardom.

Hector came through the youth ranks at Reading and had countless loan spells before forcing his way into the first-team at the Madejski Stadium.

And, after making 63 appearances for the Royals, he was snapped up by Chelsea on deadline day in summer 2015, before returning to Berkshire for the rest of the season on loan.

Hector has since had temporary spells with Hull City, Eintracht Frankfurt and last season with Sheffield Wednesday, where he made 39 appearances and scored two goals in all competitions.

Despite several managers being at the helm during his time at Stamford Bridge, he has never made a first-team appearance for Chelsea and he is now looking forward to continuing his career elsewhere.

Indeed, such is Hector’s desperation to leave the Blues, he makes the short journey across West London to Craven Cottage despite being unable to play for Scott Parker’s side until January.

He has penned a two-and-a-half year deal and will train with the Championship outfit for the next three months before being available for selection.

On his departure, Hector told Fulham’s website: “It was an easy decision to make. My Mum is from Fulham, so it’s nice to join a club that some of my family support.

“It’s good to now be a part of the set-up here. Hopefully things can work out well and we can get promoted. I know how tough the Championship is and it won’t be any different for us.

“We’ll have to work hard for it but the squad is very good and my job will be to help them push for promotion.”
