Giroud 'to stay with Blues for another 12 months'

19th May 2019, 16:28 by Simon Barlow

Olivier Giroud will stay at Stamford Bridge next season as reports claim Chelsea have triggered a 12-month contract extension clause.

Telefoot claim the Frenchman will stay in London next season after Chelsea took the step that manager Maurizio Sarri indicated they would do last month.

The clause had to be triggered before the end of the season to be effective so it looks like Giroud will now be a Chelsea player until June 30, 2020.

The former Arsenal striker wanted to keep his options open amid interest from back home - most notably from Nice.

Giroud, who scored 12 goals last season, had also publicly complained about the role he had played at Stamford Bridge.

The 32-year-old made just seven Premier League starts throughout the campaign and played most of his football on Thursday nights in the Europa League.

Chelsea's Fifa-imposed transfer ban, which covers the next two windows, appears to have informed their decision to ensure the World Cup winner is an option for the Blues boss next season.

Earlier this week it was reported that Chelsea will not take up the option to sign on-loan striker Gonzalo Higuain permanently this summer.
