Hudson-Odoi ready to return for Chelsea
Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi could make his return from an Achilles injury this week in an Under-23s game.
The 18-year-old has been on the sidelines since April after he suffered an Achilles tendon injury against Burnley during a Premier League match.
Hudson-Odoi was initially set to return in October at the earliest but he has stunned medical staff after reporting for light training in August.
After five months on the sidelines, Hudson-Odoi is now ready to return to the fold at Stamford Bridge.
He told reporters: “Recovery has gone really well, I feel good, so hopefully I’ll be back after the international break.
“It was something that I was scared would take longer but recovery has gone really well and quick for myself, and I’m happy everything has gone to plan.’
Hudson-Odoi has yet to sign a new contract in west London despite months of speculation. The Wandsworth-born midfielder was linked with a move to Bayern Munich in January before his injury derailed talks.
Bayern were looking to sign a replacements for Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben, while they also missed out on Leroy Sane of Manchester City.
Hudson-Odoi’s return will give boss Frank Lampard a considerable boost with Chelsea making a slow start to the season.
Chelsea are 11th after the first four Premier League games, with their only win coming against Norwich City. The Blues are unbeaten in three but have struggled to keep clean sheets so far under the former Derby County coach.
Hudson-Odoi’s return will give Lampard more options out wide, with Christian Pulisic, Mason Mount, Pedro and Willian all available as Chelsea look to compete for a top-four spot.
