I could have stayed at Chelsea – Fabregas

14th April 2019, 15:40 by Daniel McCarthy

Cesc Fabregas admits he could have stayed at Chelsea but had to leave due to a lack of playing time.

The Spaniard, who had been with Chelsea since the summer of 2014 and helped the Blues to win two Premier League titles, was sold to Monaco in January, under the then-stewardship of his former Arsenal team mate Thierry Henry.

He was used sparingly in the first half of the season at Stamford Bridge, only featuring regularly in the Europa League group stages as well as the Carabao Cup.

Manager Maurizio Sarri has preferred for most of the season to play with Jorginho and N'Golo Kante in midfield, as well as one of Ross Barkley or Mateo Kovacic.

And, Fabregas says he had no choice but to depart the club as he was convinced Sarri would not change his personnel or tactical style.

"I could have stayed in London but a coach arrived who brought along a player who was like a son to him," he said, referring to Jorginho.

"Even If I played better, it was impossible to find space. I love football and I couldn't have been happy just because I was at Chelsea."
