Jorginho set for long Chelsea stay

9th September 2019, 15:23 by James Mason

The agent of Chelsea midfielder Jorginho has revealed his client is set to stay at Stamford Bridge for "at least another four years".

Italy international Jorginho joined Chelsea in July 2018 from Napoli for a deal reportedly worth around £57million and he was a regular first-team fixture under then-manager Maurizio Sarri, who left this summer to take over at Italian champions Juventus.

The 27-year-old midfielder, who arrived with a glowing reputation following his four-year spell in Naples, played 37 Premier League games during his debut season, scoring two goals in the process.

Despite featuring on a regular basis, the Brazil-born star did come under criticism from pundits and supporters for his performances, which were deemed to be lacking creativity and any real oomph.

Sarri was tipped to bring Jorginho to Turin with him this summer but with the Blues under a two transfer-window ban, new boss Frank Lampard decided to keep the midfielder in West London.

Former Derby boss Lampard also appears to be a big admirer of the ex-Verona youth player after starting him in all four PL matches this term, which have yielded five points from a potential 12.

Jorginho has looked better at the start of this campaign having spent a year in England and his agent, Joao Santos, insist his client will not be heading anywhere for some time.

He told Radio Kiss Kiss: “We have mid-to-long-term project with Chelsea, similar to when he joined Hellas Verona and then Napoli. There are five years left on his contract and let’s say he’d like to stay for at least another four years.”

Jorginho is expected to retain his starting spot for Saturday’s trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers, who have drawn three and lost one of their four league matches to sit 17th in the table.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s men, who have qualified for the Europa League group stage, won this fixture last season, with goals from Raul Jimenez and Diogo Jota ruling out Ruben Loftus-Cheeks early strike.
